Editor’s Letter

Dear Reader,

After a hugely successful past year at Expanded Field, we have seized the opportunity to break through our previous self-issued limits and expand our output of works. In the future, and starting with this (aptly themed) issue, Limits, we hope to be producing two mini-issues in the fall and spring. These issues are going to be a chance for Expanded Field, its writers, and readers, to experiment with work written specifically for a theme – chosen by the Editorial Board – or for Expanded Field to release other works in a more concise and streamlined way.

We hope you enjoy this new (mini) issue, and it encourages you to consider the limits imposed on ourselves and others, by ourselves and others. These pieces creatively deconstruct different limitations we face, both concrete and abstract. As Arthur C. Clarke once said, “the only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them” – we hope this prompts you to question your ‘possible’.

This issue muses on mental health and personal limits; explicit restrictions we can see around us in society and culture; the limits of language; the limits of land. It is forceful and often dark, but, read together, recalls that mantra of Gen Z’s everywhere, “the limit does not exist!” We know it has been an earth-shaking few years, especially with the continuous restrictions in societies caused by the ongoing pandemic. But, through creativity, empathy, and understanding, we hope to help soften some boundaries a little.

I would like to give a huge thank you to the new, incoming Editorial Board, and to Maia Baum, Rosa Kalkowsky and Art van ‘t Rood for their dedicated work over the last two years as they move on to new ventures. Expanded Field will continue sharing exceptional work with you – to learn more about what we do and future themes, releases and projects, follow us on social media (@expandedfieldjournal).

Happy reading!
